Lack of knowledge and commonly held attitudes about hospice and palliative care prevent many Chinese from getting these services, says Dr. Esther Luo, an outpatient palliative care physician at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center in California. Dr. V.J. Periyakoil of the Stanford Palliative Care Education and Training Program said Chinese families are tight-knit and discussions of hospice services can cause disagreements.
