A placebo-controlled trial using pentoxifylline and prednisolone together to treat severe alcoholic hepatitis did not find improvements in six-month survival compared with prednisolone alone, French researchers report. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital researchers commented the study did not offer much input about the value of pentoxifylline alone, which they said could be an option for patients who cannot take corticosteroids.
