The Common Core State Standards have brought an increased focus of literacy and fact-based reading across subject areas and a greater use of weekly assessments and quizzes about their reading in the North Carolina's Alamance-Burlington School System. The district has created its own curricula with the help of more than 250 teachers who helped determine how to meet the standards. The state also created a set of standards for subjects like science, art and social studies called the Essential Standards.
