Scientists have discovered that birds lack the protein tristetraprolin, also known as TTP, which plays a crucial role in immune system functioning among other taxonomic groups including mammals. More work is needed to determine how birds are able to withstand pathogens despite apparently lacking TTP. "This will be important to understand, both to protect birds from infections, and to protect man from bird-transmitted" viruses, the authors note.
