Although E. coli O157 does not cause illness in cattle, it causes serious and sometimes deadly disease in humans. New research suggests vaccinating cattle against the strain could reduce human infection rates by an estimated 85%. "This study is an excellent example [of] the interface between veterinary and human medicine and of the concept of 'One Health' in action -- controlling infections in animals can have a major impact on public health," said lead author and veterinarian Stuart Reid.
