There's a trend for some entrepreneurs, especially in Silicon Valley, to promote trial and error as a substitute for rigorous research and planning, writes Erika Hall. "Failing fast" can prove effective, but it's often better to conduct preliminary research to figure out what people want and whether your prototypes and startups are addressing real needs. "The key is to be honest about how much we really know," Hall writes.
