Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, reported that over a three-month period futile care provided by five ICUs in one health system cost about $2.6 million. The study in JAMA Internal Medicine found intensivists said they thought the care they provided was futile about 11% of the time. Experts who commented on the study urged caution when analyzing the data and potential savings of reducing futile care because most ICU costs are fixed.
