Major contributions to the economy and large cash prizes for tournament winners, such as FedEx playoff's $67 million pot, is proving that the U.S. golf industry can overcome economic hardships, writes Chris Murphy.
"The golf industry is larger than the spectator sports and performing arts industries combined," says World Golf Foundation chief executive Steve Mona. "That's pretty substantial compared to those two. Beyond the monetary contribution it makes, it also employs close to two million Americans with a combined wage income of $55.6 billion."
