Patients with diabetes had a significantly increased risk of postoperative acute renal failure, acute myocardial infarction and 30-day mortality following non-cardiac surgery than those without diabetes, a study in Diabetes Care indicated. Researchers said diabetes patients were also likely to have longer hospital stays and higher health costs, and those with type 1 diabetes, uncontrolled diabetes or diabetes-related comorbidities faced an even greater risk of death after surgery.
