As the Sept. 23 deadline approaches for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act's Omnibus Final Rule, O&P providers need to ensure that their compliance programs for patient privacy and security of medical information are current. Successful implementation rests upon four key actions, according to health care legal experts Kimberly Kannensohn and Amanda Enyeart, including naming a privacy and security officer, establishing security rules to guard electronic health information, developing a privacy and breach notification policy and training staff in HIPAA requirements.
