An Institute of Medicine report said the U.S. has a "crisis in cancer care delivery" that requires a new path forward to better use care coordination and gather data on quality and outcomes. Care decisions too often are not evidence-based, and care costs nearly doubled from 2004 to 2010. "Changes are needed across the board, from how we communicate with patients, to how we translate research into practice, to how we coordinate care and measure its quality," said committee chairwoman Patricia Ganz.
