Small-fiber sensory neuropathy and large-fiber nerve dysfunction were common in type 1 diabetes patients who had the disease for 40 years, according to a small study in Diabetes Care. Yearly screening with simple nerve-function testing is essential in identifying patients at risk of foot ulcers and other conditions because small-fiber nerve damage often does not cause neuropathic symptoms, the lead researcher said.
