Standardized tests likely are to remain part of the education system in Minnesota, but officials say the role of the tests is evolving. Rather than being used punitively against students, teachers and schools, some tests have been redesigned to gather information and measure whether students are ready for college or careers. "If all the other tests show me the student is on track, I'm not going to put much credence in an abhorrent score," said Dave Heistad, a school-data expert.
