Veterinarians and biologists gathered at the Alaska Spine Institute's imaging center last week to take part in imaging studies and a necropsy performed on a killer whale calf that was only a few days old. The animal, which died of unknown causes, offered a rare opportunity to image an entire whale and allowed scientists a chance to thoroughly work through the steps in a whale necropsy, a goal of veterinary pathologist Stephen Raverty, who is working with other experts to create a protocol.
