The Amateur Wine Competition at the annual Maryland Wine Festival is expecting a variety of nongrape, fruit-based wines to make up half of its entries this year, said Patricia Valas, a trained wine judge of more than 15 years and a member of the American Wine Society. Greg Sliviak, who makes wine using raspberries, strawberries, peaches and other fruits, has been a frequent winner of the competition, and Valas said she has even tried a jalapeno wine.
