Nutrition experts say weight-loss fads, such as the potato diet, juices and cleanses, or human chorionic gonadotropin shots are not healthy substitutes for a nutritious eating plan. Paulette Lambert, nutrition director at the California Health & Longevity Institute, also recommends against using a gluten-free diet, the treatment for celiac disease, as a weight-loss plan because she says many people cut gluten-filled junk food but replace it with gluten-free substitutes that can be high in sugar and low in fiber.
