Pennsylvania Judge Dante Pellegrini on Thursday ordered Montgomery County Registrar of Wills D. Bruce Hanes to stop issuing marriage license to same-sex couples. Pellegrini said in his ruling that Hanes, in issuing the licenses, "admittedly failed to comply with his mandatory ministerial public duty" to uphold the state's marriage equality ban. "Unless and until either the General Assembly repeals or suspends the Marriage Law provisions or a court of competent jurisdiction orders that the law is not to be obeyed or enforced, the Marriage Law in its entirety is to be obeyed and enforced by all commonwealth public officials," Pellegrini wrote. It's unclear what the ruling means for the 174 couples who received licenses from Hanes, and a separate legal challenge to the marriage ban is pending in federal court.
