Historical research projects should be of genuine interest to the researchers, say Pennsylvania high-school students Emily Keating and Mary Smith, who both have competed in National History Day. They offer this and other advice on history research, such as seeking out as many primary sources as possible and choosing an intriguing topic. "You have to have some connection," said Smith, who was among a group of students who researched the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911, in which 146 New York City garment workers died.
