Lea-Ann Ellison, who drew criticism for a photo of her lifting weights two weeks before she was expected to give birth, says exercise, including CrossFit, helped her avoid pregnancy complications such as back aches, morning sickness and cravings. Dr. Daniel Roshan of New York University Medical School said that while physicians want pregnant women to do moderate exercise, they generally do not recommend such a strenuous workout, but he noted that Ellison is an experienced lifter and likely bore most of the weight on her arms.
