Babies born to women who took prescription pain relievers, including Oxycontin, Vicodin and Percocet, early in their pregnancy had a twofold increased risk of having a neural tube birth defect than those who were not exposed to the drugs in utero, a study showed. Because neural tube defects rarely happen, researchers said that the spike in risk was modest. The findings appear in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.
