Proterro is counting on its algae-based sucrose extraction system to produce advanced biofuels that can compete with fossil fuels in terms of price. Proterro's technology uses less water and needs less space than conventional algae production systems by using vertical strips of a composite material on which to grow bioengineered cyanobacteria, allowing the sucrose to drip down by gravity. The company has tested the system in the laboratory and is working to develop a demonstration-scale facility in Florida.
