Shared housing situations -- much like those on NBC's long-running "Golden Girls" sitcom -- are rising in popularity among retirees. Linda Williams, 66, and Marianne Kilkenny, 63, who are roommates with two other women in Asheville, N.C., say companionship and mutual support were the driving factors in their housing choice, not cost -- though Williams adds that the savings do allow her to live in a better neighborhood than she would've been able to afford alone.
