It's ironic that the American Petroleum Institute chose to ramp up its anti-Renewable Fuel Standard messaging on the 1,000th consecutive day that gasoline prices have stayed above $3 per gallon, according to Renewable Fuels Association CEO and President Bob Dinneen. Ethanol offers a "viable and sustainable" way to keep gasoline prices from going higher, except that the oil industry is doing its best to keep E15 and higher blends out of the market, Dinneen said. In 2011 alone, ethanol helped a typical American household save about $1,200 on gasoline costs, he said.
