Dogs can shed all year long, write veterinarian Marty Becker and journalist Gina Spadafori, but some breeds tend to shed more in the spring and fall, when a new, more seasonally appropriate coat grows. Regular bathing and brushing with the right tool for the breed are important ways to keep the mess under control. Excessive shedding, however, can be a sign of illness, so a veterinary exam is indicated in these dogs.
