The cumulative effect of head impacts on young football players is the subject of an ongoing study by researchers in North Carolina and Virginia. Using brain imaging, neurological exams and accelerometer-equipped helmets, the researchers worked with two youth teams and one high school team over the 2012-2013 football season, assessing more than 16,000 impacts. The goal is to devise safer means of play and better equipment.
