More than 600,000 students in 32,000 schools nationwide are expected to participate this year in school safety patrols -- students charged with helping escort students safely to school. Many students who take part in the program, administered by AAA with local schools and law enforcement, consider it a badge of honor to wear the neon safety patrol belt. The program is expanding to include a focus on leadership training, with former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton touted among the graduates.
