Verona Elementary School in New Jersey has introduced an engineering-design class that focuses on real-world problems, such as how to provide clean drinking water on a wide scale. Students will conduct experiments on water flow and learn about water-treatment systems and conservation methods. "My goal is that when they're older and choose careers, I at least want them to be aware of [engineering] and how it works so they have options," said Larry Siegel, who teaches the class.
