The carbonation in soda may make it difficult for the brain to tell sugar from artificial sweeteners, possibly leading to higher consumption of sugar and food, according to a study in the journal Gastroenterology. Italian researchers said more study is needed, but suggested that tricking the brain about sweetener type also could lead people to drink more diet beverages because the taste is perceived as being as good as drinks sweetened with real sugar.
