A study in Diabetes Care showed family members of type 1 diabetes patients with hypoglycemia unawareness curtail their regular lives to help patients detect and treat low blood glucose levels. Family members also reported feeling physically afraid of their relative or partner during hypoglycemic episodes because of personality changes and aggressive behavior, which can also cause difficulty in administering treatment. The results highlight the need for added information and emotional support for family members who care for such patients, researchers said.
