A genetic analysis of samples of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, which has killed 58 people since emerging about a year ago, showed that the virus transferred from animals to humans a number of times. Researchers also found that the virus is genetically diverse and there are three distinct lineages circulating in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The findings, published in The Lancet, may help experts develop better measures to control the spread of the virus.
