English-language learners can use primary documents to learn and blogging to share what they know about the American Civil War, asserts Margaret Blaha, who works with ELLs in China. Blaha's lesson plan can be adapted to various grade levels, and calls for students to study a key figure from that period of U.S. history. Students use what they have learned to write blog entries and complete cartoon thought bubbles on photographs to illustrate what certain historical figures, such as President Abraham Lincoln, might be thinking.
