The writing is on the wall for the IT industry, according to Michael Friedenberg, who writes that emerging mobile, virtualization and software-defined networking technologies are fueling the most significant disruption the industry has experienced in nearly three decades. IDC says the sector is entering a "third platform" of existence -- characterized by the ascendency of mobile and cloud-based Big Data and social networking architectures -- that, according to Cisco CEO John Chambers, could leave as many as a third of tech companies in the dust.
