Students who attend the popular service-learning class at Tullahoma High School in Tennessee must plan and execute a group service project and individual service work. The students are graded on, among other things, their ability to determine community needs, meeting the need and their language arts skills in letters and e-mails for the project. The intent of the class is "for students to develop a sense of personal integrity and responsibility to the community and then recognize connections between what they are learning in school and putting it to use," teacher Sandy Klonaris said.
