A movement launched by a frustrated automotive engineer in the U.K. seeks the same legal protection for the title "engineer" as afforded in other countries, including the U.S. Casual usage has led to confusion and a perception that engineers are mechanics in some cases. "Engineers are a passionate breed," observed professor Peter Childs of Imperial College's design engineering group. "They're so dedicated to the subject that they're prepared to put in the extra 20 hours a week, every single week of their lives, on top of normal practice. So I can see why they want to protect the word engineer."
