Following a five-year survey of California Cancer Registry patients who underwent thyroid ultrasound imaging, researchers were able to isolate three characteristics most clearly associated with cancerous nodules -- microcalcification, size and solid composition. The finding of the study, published in JAMA, could potentially lower the number of false positives and reduce unnecessary biopsies by as much as 90%.
