A UNICEF report released on Friday revealed that the number of children who died before age 5 declined from 90 deaths for every 1,000 children in 1990 to 48 for every 1,000 in 2012. Most of the deaths last year were due to preventable illnesses, including pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. Despite such progress, the world is falling short of the goal of reducing the mortality rate among children younger than 5 years by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015, the organization said.
