Dolf van den Brink -- now Heineken's U.S. chief -- made his name in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he managed nearly 700 local-born workers and doubled local market share in four years. Van Den Brink adopted an informal management style, learned French to speak to his workers and soon became known as "Papa Plus" or "Daddy More" for his exhortations to improve and grow. "That is probably the defining role in my career, when I will look back at it in 30 years," he says.
