Almost 10,000 Department of Veterans Affairs employees were furloughed Monday due to the federal government shutdown, including 7,000 employees of the Veterans Benefits Administration. The VA says the furloughs, as well as its decision to discontinue overtime pay for workers processing disability claims, will hurt the agency's efforts to reduce the claims backlog. "Clear progress for veterans and their families is at risk without immediate action by Congress ... to reopen the government," the VA said in a statement.
