3D printing isn't new, but the technology is starting to expand into a variety of industries. U.K.-based IDTechEx will host a conference in California to explore the technology's entrance into the manufacturing arena. The market for 3D products and services is expected to soar from $2.2 billion to $6 billion by 2017, Wohlers Associates says. Autodesk CEO Carl Bass acknowledges the technology is currently overhyped, but says "it's underhyped for the long term, and he likened the current state of 3-D printing to where computing was in the 1980s," Patrick Hoge writes.
