Freight carload traffic of U.S. railroads dropped 1.6% in the week ending Oct. 5 year-on-year, but intermodal activity climbed 6.2%, according to the Association of American Railroads. Of the 10 carload categories, seven posted gains, led by a 12.3% increase in shipments of motor vehicles and parts. Overall U.S. traffic in the latest week rose 2.1% compared with year-ago figures, AAR noted.
