The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has upheld Apple's broad claims involving touch-screen technology more than five years after the company first applied for the protection. In Europe, Samsung has waved an olive branch before antitrust regulators, offering to stop suing rivals over use of standard essential patents for five years if they agree on "a particular licensing framework," the European Commission said. Samsung faces potentially massive fines after the EC ruled in 2012 that the company's patent litigation has violated EU antitrust rules.
