Some state courts have held that physicians have a responsibility to warn patients, including those in hospice, about the dangers of taking prescription painkillers and other medications and then driving a vehicle, health care attorney Carolyn Buppert writes. Physicians who believe a patient would represent an imminent threat to safety may have a responsibility to inform a third party, such as a relative, state motor vehicle agency or the police.
