Halloween can be more trick than treat for pets, as candy, candles and costumes could pose threats to their health, according to AVMA experts CEO Dr. Ron DeHaven and President Dr. Clark K. Fobian. "Nothing will ruin your Halloween fun like an emergency trip to the hospital, or to the animal hospital, because one of your animals got into the candy bowl or got scared enough to scratch or bite," said Dr. Fobian.
Among the potential threats to pets are chocolate toxicity and xylitol poisoning as well as dangers posed by candles, costumes and a constantly opening door.
