Data presented at the annual clinical congress of the American College of Surgeons indicate that obese diabetes patients who underwent gastric bypass had lower A1C and attained a mean weight loss of 71% of their excess body weight at one year, compared with 38% in patients who had gastric banding and 50% in those who underwent sleeve gastrectomy. Patients in the bypass arm also showed greater reductions in fasting insulin levels, with a 68% decrease, while those in the banding and sleeve groups had 52% and 61% decreases, respectively, researchers noted.
