House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told Republican lawmakers in private conversations that he won't let a partisan standoff over the national debt limit force the U.S. government to default on its debts. The assurances came as the Treasury warned that allowing the government to default might lead to "a financial crisis and recession that could echo the events of 2008 or worse."
