House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told Republican lawmakers in private conversations that he won't let a partisan standoff over the national debt limit force the U.S. government to default on its debts. If necessary, Boehner will rely on Republican and Democratic votes in the House to raise the debt cap, he told colleagues. The assurances came as the Treasury warned that allowing the government to default might lead to "a financial crisis and recession that could echo the events of 2008 or worse."
