The Pittsburg, Calif., City Council has voted unanimously to ban single-use plastic bags, to reduce litter and protect waterways. The ordinance will go into effect Jan. 15. The council plans to conduct an annual review for at least three years to determine whether the law needs to be changed. The ordinance includes a 10-cent charge for paper bags the first year, a 15-cent charge the second year and a 25-cent charge starting the third year. The intent is to support marketing of reusable bags by retailers.
