As California schools roll out Common Core State Standards, fewer high-school students are learning math by listening to teacher lectures. Instead, students like those at Grossmont Union High School District in La Mesa, Calif., sit in groups and collaborate to solve problems. "We need to get our kids to a point that when they're leaving high school, going into college, they're ready to create new, innovative programs, ideas, thoughts, whatever it might be," principal Randy Montesanto said.
