California Health Interview Survey data show that 11% fewer children ages 2 to 17 drank at least one sugar-sweetened beverage per day in 2011 to 2012 compared with 2005 to 2007, but there was a 5-percentage-point increase among 12- to 17-year-olds reporting daily consumption of sugary drinks. The rate decreased among children younger than 12, but lead author Susan Babey of the University of California, Los Angeles, said the data for older children is troubling because potential health consequences are too far in the future to be meaningful to them.
