Researchers in Japan and the U.K. have demonstrated a 280-mile multicore fiber network controlled by software-defined networking technology capable of transmitting data at 409 terabits per second in either direction. "That's 818 Tb/s in total -- within spitting distance of seemingly mythical Petabit speeds," Kevin Fitchard writes.
